Children Hunt for Eggs at Easter Egg Roll

In this photograph, taken by Dave Johnson on April 12, 1982, excited children venture into a straw-covered pen to search for Easter eggs during a hunt that took place as part of the 1982 Easter Egg Roll. Children discovered approximately 8,000 eggs at the 1982 Easter egg hunt. The Egg Roll has been an Easter Monday tradition at the White House since 1878, when President Rutherford B. Hayes opened the South Lawn to local children who were prohibited from playing egg rolling games on the grounds of the Capitol.
